The Lindau Fence

A. The Idea

Since Adler took on the 'Schloss Cochem' project, various ideas have been discussed in recent months.

Because it is a fairly complicated process, and also depends on the construction of both the Pulver Insel and the rest of Schloss Cochem,

Julian Parusel, who is my contact to Adler, and I decided at the beginning of September 2023 to focus first on the fencing opposite Rathaus Lindau as a 'revenue'.
Although initially I didn't want to burden him with too much work (or was there some modesty at play?) I only thought of 27 cm 'normal' fence.

However, Julian immediately planned to fence the entire length, including four gates in front of the Auhagen City Gate.

B. The Planning

On September 13th we really started to talking things thtough in a more focussed way, texting about measurments, material, form, shape, adornments, etc.

But as it goes... Julian listens to my initial ideas and then a thinking process in his head takes over.

From that point he creates things far beyond my expectation. I would have been happy with just a Jugendstil fence.

Simply put them on the latch, only 27 centimeters of reghular fence without a gate!

But no!

I had to remind myself time and again, that since Julian has made the Schloss Cochem Moduel in a certain way his own project,

and he constantly adjusts his ideas until the most beautiful form emerges, it's no surprise that we're heading for the best of the best.

And even then, there are these 'cherries' with which he surprises me all the time. But that's another chapter I didn't know of yet.

We started with the measurements first. Afterwards we would consider the choice and form of the fence.

Mind you, we all discussed this by text messages, pictures and voice messages.

So, first of all Julian sent me some drawings for mutual brainstorming.

Behind his PC he can rearrange everything after my liking.

The red crest, inserted into the Jugendstil fence, is already focussing on Lindau, since it's the Lindau crest:

But... it will NOT be that way! At least...

Patience is a virtue!

I continued taking measurements on the opposite side.

C. The Real Thing

(26.9.2023)

After a fourtnight of silence from Cologne, Julian sursprisde me today twice.

Not only had he finished the Lindau Fence after his liking, but in the afternoon he also sent me a picture with the DHL ticket.

The Lindau Fence was on it's way to the Cochemer Bahn!

And from the PC into reality...

Adler at work...

And then...

Ready for transportation!

~~~
On Monday October 2, 2023, the Lindau Fence arriverd at my stead.
~~~

And not only that, also the Hebel für Schwengelpumpen (A-9180) and the Spielwaage (9190) for the Mittelaltermarkt were included.

These are described in another chapter...

~~~
Initially I wanted to place the Lindau Fence on a wooden slat.
However, on Adler's advice, it became an aluminum slat, so that the pillars became sturdier and straighter.
6.10.2023
Then came the painting of the pillars.
However, I made the mistake of painting them immediately.
Since tthese white metal pillars are cast using a mold that is rubbed with such a substance, the paint will never adhere.
I should have cleaned them with alcohol (metanol) first. Anyway, a learning moment.
I started all over again...
10.10.2023
Such delicate work as this fence shows.
However... I had to find out that now there's a limit to my model scale abilities!
As Scotty would say: "Capt'n, I can't dew it!"
Although I had calculated all the measurements correctly, it ultimately turned out that I could not get a grip on placing the hinges.
I made the mistake beforehand of first installing all the hinges separately in the walls - directly above each other - and only then cutting and installing the fences from the frame.
It now turned out that the top hinges were longer to compensate for the wider distance at the base of the wall.
However, I initially assumed a vertical positioning, because otherwise the gates - when opened - will not be upright.
In short, the effect was too sad for words, which was absolutely my bad!!
Gorgeous work by Adler, absolute stunning and very promising! But alas, sadly not as planned!
I screwed up!
To get it perfect, this kind of work needs someone with 18 years of experience indeed.
In consultation with Adler, I have returned everything, includig my aluminium base, and now the entire fencing will be assembled by Adler in the workshop.
When ready, I'll pick it up at the workshop in Köln while at the same time doing a photoshoot of the 03 154 and other Adler models at hand.
By the way, PostNL screwed up and it took no less than 13 days to get it to Köln.
Return of the Lindau Fence
(May 7, 2024)
On April 30th, I got word form Julian, that the fence was ready and sent by DHL.
This is what he showed me:
30.4.2024
On Tuesday, May 7, 2024, the Lindau Fence came back to me, now with new hinges, screws, drillings, everything neatly in bags, numbered and all.
Julian has prepared everything, including a 'Bauanleitung' with all parts numbered, each and everyone in a separate sachet.
For most since every pillar has a different screw of its own.
After purchasing a metal degreaser from Gamma, I immediately started preparing the pillars and aluminum base plate.
After drying thoroughly overnight, I started painting it the next morning.
I revised my vision so that I did not fall back on the initial dark red-brown, but back to basics:
a newly mixed beige color on a slate basis, with four Vallejo shades diluted to a beige primer.
The roof tiles were also provided with the well-known Vallejo Amaranth red color.
Finally the dry whiting, this time with Pale Sand.
And then: the assembling. All poles and their separate screws were put in small sachets together, to so make it easier for me to assemble.
All fences are also released in separate sachets, so that I only have to follow the manual. What's left now, is only plug-and-play.
And then, the Lindau Fence was finally positioned.
But first some prep work! Painting the screws I was waiting for. Still looking for smaller ones...
30.5.2024
That hole still had to be filled...
30.5.2024
And as it goes, I finally knew how to go about finishing the north end of Lindau Square. And wall that connects to the second pillar of the fence.
The rest vegetation with a small path where young (or old) people occasionally take a shortcut.
2.6.2024
Two little walls to border the square
Then there still was a gap between the two sections of cobblestones.
I first thought of putting a wooden board in here, sloping up, since there is a height difference of about 2 millimeters.
Until I found a tube of wood putti and, in an old-fashioned way, started sealing it up with my fingers. Lateron, this will be painted gray in the same color as the pavers.
And then I went with the magic box into the trainroom...
It's a pretty narow work space, so I decided to do the delictae work at the kitchen table,
carefully bring the whole fence 'an sich' in position in the Train Room and...
2.6.2024
...followed by an awesome sight!
The screw destroys the view completely! This needs a drastic solution, but that's an issue for the next day!
~~~

The next day...

~~~
How to tackle a screw and find a logical, natural solution with vegetation...
Finito!
3.6.2024
~~~

Lindau Square still needs some 'action'.

I think, Preiser's 'At the Potato Harvest' might a fitting addition to the whole scenery.
